Description
House Republicans are getting closer to passing President Donald Trump’s tax breaks, spending cuts and beefed-up border security.
Republicans look to make permanent the individual income and estate tax cuts passed in Trump’s first term, in 2017, plus enact promises he made in the 2024 campaign to not tax tips, overtime and interest on some auto loans.
On Wednesday, members of the House Freedom Caucus appeared more optimistic about the bill.
“The White House offered a proposal late last night that I think fulfills the other two parts of what the president talked about and there’s broad agreement House Freedom Caucus that that's included in the package I think this package is on is on route to get passed,” House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Andy Harris, (R) Maryland said.
Speaker Mike Johnson wants to pass the package over unified Democratic opposition by Memorial Day.
Rep. Scott Perry, (R) Pennsylvania, said the deadline to have it done is arbitrary.
“This is a completely arbitrary deadline set by people here to force people into a corner to make bad decisions. It's more important to get this right, to get it correct, than to get fast. And we are sitting at the table to do that," Perry said.
GOP divisions have narrowed but continue as fiscal conservatives worry the bill doesn’t do enough to curb Medicaid spending.
