Description
Residents in Kentucky and Missouri were left to dig through wreckage and seek temporary housing Sunday after tornadoes and severe storms swept through parts of the Midwest and South and left dozens of people dead.
Kentucky was hardest hit as a devastating tornado damaged hundreds of homes, tossed vehicles and left many people homeless. At least 18 people were killed, most of them in southeastern Kentucky's Laurel County, and 10 more were critically injured.
Parts of two dozen state roads were closed, and some could take days to reopen, according to Gov. Andy Beshear, who said the death toll could still rise.
The latest Kentucky storms were part of a weather system Friday that killed seven in Missouri and two in northern Virginia, authorities said.
The system also spawned tornadoes in Wisconsin, brought punishing heat to Texas and temporarily enveloped parts of Illinois — including Chicago — in a pall of dust on an otherwise sunny day.
A smattering of flood warnings were issued Sunday for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and other southern states, according to the National Weather Service.
