Description
Despite not making it through the Texas Legislature, lawmakers are still determined to fight for a bill that would have required Texas landlords to do more to fix handrails, ramps and elevators at apartments.
Democratic State Senator Carol Alvardo, D-Houston, introduced Senate Bill 1802. It would have required Texas landlords to fix broken elevators – or at least prove that they were actively trying to repair them – within a reasonable amount of time.
“If there are any issues with supply chain or things that are out of their control, then they would have to show good faith or show some kind of proof that they’ve ordered the parts, they’re waiting,” Sen. Alvarado said. “There has to be some explanation with proof that you are doing everything humanly possible to repair the elevator.”
Sen. Alvarado said SB 1802 died on the House calendar, despite having support from lawmakers in both the Senate and the House.
