Description
A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) team sedate and load a rhino into a transport crate as part of an 18-day translocation project, which takes 21 eastern black rhinos to Segera Conservancy in Laikipia County. The initiative is part of a larger plan to establish a new rhino range and boost the national population. "If the rhino becomes overpopulated in Lake Nakuru, the breeding rates will slow down and we lose the genetic resources. So it's always good to offload the extra rhinos", explains Dominic Mijele, a vet with the KWS. According to the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), there are only about 28,000 rhinos left in the world, including nearly 24,000 in Africa. More than 2,000 of them live in Kenya.
