Description
In Kosjeric, a town of 10,000 in western Serbia, voter turnout in local elections has broken records. These elections mark the first major test for the government since protests erupted in November 2024, after a roof collapse in Novi Sad train station killed 16 people and triggered nationwide demonstrations and university blockades. The ruling nationalist Serbian Progressive Party faces a strong challenge from a united list of independent candidates backed by students. “We expect freedom to arrive,” local resident Snezana Ilic says after casting her ballot in elections seen as a litmus test at the national level.
