Several DC businesses are grappling with the Trumps administration's latest immigration enforcement efforts, now targeting restaurants around the District. Business owners told WUSA9 that at most eight ICE agents came into their restaurants, asked to speak to employees, and requested I-9 documentation, leaving workers rattled.
DHS says that under the administrative inspection process, employers receive at least three business days to produce the I-9 forms requested in the initial visit. Businesses found intentionally violating the law by hiring and employing unauthorized workers could be subjected to fines and even criminal charges under federal law.
City officials are anticipating federal agents to return to the businesses in the upcoming days. This process could end up taking days or weeks.
