Description
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is heading overseas once again—this time to Nice, France. According to a statement from her office, the summit "will bring together elected leaders and officials from major coastal cities and regions to develop an action plan focused on research, resources, and long-term resilience strategies.
The announcement came only after WWL Louisiana reached out to her office for comment.
While international travel is not unusual for city leaders, Cantrell’s timing has raised eyebrows, especially in the wake of a recent high-profile jail escape. Attorney General Liz Murrill and others have publicly questioned the mayor’s visibility and leadership in the weeks since the incident, with Murrill tweeting, "Where is the Mayor?"
Although the Orleans Parish jail is not directly under the mayor’s jurisdiction, WWL political analyst Clancy DuBos points out that Cantrell is still the city’s chief executive.
"She's the face of government in the city. And I would compare this to a hurricane," Dubos said. "A mayor or a governor is not responsible for the arrival of a hurricane, but they are responsible for the response, and it is their job. It is her job to keep the citizens feeling calm and safe and to reassure them at every turn."
This is at least her second trip since the jailbreak.
