Description
Detained Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was back in court for a hearing May 22, facing the same judge who recently found he was eligible to be deported.
Mahmoud is a graduate student at Columbia University and is the first student arrested as the Trump administration promised to crack down on protesters against the war in Gaza. He is a legal, permanent resident of the United States and is married to an American woman.
Still — Secretary of State Marco Rubio found Khalil's participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations proved he presents a potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequence under a rarely used provision. Despite not providing evidence to support that claim — Judge Jamee Comans sided with the Trump administration.
In this latest hearing, expert witnesses took the stand — making the case that deporting Khalil to Syria or Algeria would put him and his family in grave danger.
