Description
A federal judge says the government likely violated the Constitution by trying to deport Mahmoud Khalil — a Columbia student protester — under a rarely used foreign policy law.
Khalil is a legal U.S. resident. He was arrested in March in the lobby of his university-owned apartment and flown to a detention center in Louisiana, where he remains in custody. His wife gave birth while he was behind bars.
This is the first arrest under a Trump-era crackdown on student protesters. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says it’s about national security.
The judge says it could open the door to arbitrary enforcement.
