Description
A building in Central City collapsed Saturday evening, leaving nearby cars covered in debris.
The incident happened at 5:35 p.m. in the 1400 block of Oretha Castle Haley Blvd, the New Orleans Police Department said.
Two cars were parked in front and some of the bricks fell on them. No injuries are reported at this time.
The roof is completely caved in and the entire second floor appears to have collapsed.
Property records for the building date back to at least 1941 and show it last changed hands about 15 years ago.
A police officer said a building inspector is expected to visit the property.
WWL Louisiana's Rachel Handley was on the scene. "Part of a building in Central City has collapsed. A few cars are parked in front of it and appear to have been hit by falling bricks," she reported in a tweet.
A photo also shows a giant hole left and a large pile of the building's remnants on the ground.
NOPD said the streets in the area are blocked off. NOLA Ready said the intersection is closed until further notice.
"NOFD and The City of New Orleans Department will investigate to determine the cause of the incident," a release said.
