Description
Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin says Beryl has broken numerous records as it continues through the Caribbean.
Hurricane Beryl strengthened on Monday as it crossed into the Caribbean Sea. Its winds are now 150 mph which makes it a strong Category 4 storm, nearly a Category 5 (which starts at 157 mph). Beryl made landfall just after 11 a.m. Monday in Grenada and continues to churn into the eastern Caribbean Sea.
Beryl will move west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea this week. Wind shear may increase which will likely cause the storm to weaken.
By the weekend, it should be somewhere around Yucatan or the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It appears high pressure over the southeast US could keep Beryl on a westward track away from the northern Gulf Coast. This set-up could send it into Mexico or southern Texas.
We are not expecting direct impacts from Beryl for our part of the Gulf Coast at this time. Still, we'll continue to track it closely all week.
Aside from Beryl... Tropical Storm Chris formed briefly in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday night. It has already dropped from tropical storm status and is now inland over Mexico.
An area of possible tropical development is following right behind Beryl in the Atlantic. It has a medium chance of developing in the next several days. The next name on the list is Debby.
