Description
Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford has an update on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
Development is not expected in the next seven days. This week, a broad low-pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico will likely send several inches of rain to parts of the Florida Peninsula. The system will fling moisture toward Florida but not much toward us. Our rain totals may be as little as a half-inch or less through the upcoming weekend, while parts of the Florida Peninsula could get 5-10 inches.
This low-pressure area is part of a common June weather pattern called the Central American Gyre. It’s a broad area of moisture that slowly rotates over Central America. It can last weeks and occasionally helps spin off a tropical storm or two. We have had several storms form from this pattern, including Claudette in June 2021 and Cristobal in June 2020. These storms are usually large rain producers.
