Description
Elsewhere in the tropics we have a wave in the subtropics that has low chance for development, but it won't affect anyone.
Fiona strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane late Monday as it heads north away from Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Bands of moisture poured more than two feet of rain in parts of Puerto Rico causing catastrophic flooding in part of the island.
Fiona is expected to continue curving northwest and then north away from Dominican Republic on through Tuesday as a strengthening hurricane. It could achieve Category 3 status by Tuesday as it heads north over the western Atlantic around a ridge of high pressure. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center predicts it becoming a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph by Wednesday. If it reaches Category 3 with winds of 111-129 mph, it would be the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season.
