A 19-year-old man who was reportedly wielding a knife and threatening a relative was shot by a Gahanna police officer Thursday morning, according to Chief of Police Jeffrey Spence.
Spence said police received a report around 9:40 a.m. of a suicidal person at a home in the 300 block of Lincolnshire Road, off of McCutcheon Road.
In a press briefing on Thursday afternoon, officials showed body camera footage of the encounter.
When the first officer arrived at the home, he met a relative of Makhi McMillan in the front yard and asked if they could get him to come outside as he was waiting on his backup.
On their way inside the home, the relative paused inside the doorway before rushing inside. Yelling could be heard in the video and the officer followed the relative inside.
Spence said at this point, a second officer had arrived and went into the home behind the first officer.
Spence said once inside, they found McMillan armed with a knife and threatening relatives.
Officers were heard telling the suspect to drop his weapon more than a dozen times. Body camera shows both officers with their weapons drawn.
One officer fired their weapon and McMillan was struck. At least two shots can be heard in the footage.
The officer who fired his weapon began providing aid and called for medics.
McMillan was taken to Grant Medical Center where he remains in serious condition, according to Spence.
No one else was injured, Spence added.
A knife was recovered from the scene and McMillan is charged with one count of felonious assault.
