Description
President Donald Trump spoke Thursday about his latest travel ban on the citizens of 12 countries, saying it "can't come soon enough."
Trump made the comments as he met with the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office.
Citing national security concerns and resurrecting a hallmark policy of his first term, Trump announced the move on Wednesday, banning the citizens of 12 countries from entering the United States and restricting access for people from seven others.
The ban takes effect on Monday and will mostly affect people from Africa and the Middle East.
"I can say that it can't come soon enough, frankly. We want to keep bad people out of our country," Trump said during his Oval meeting with Merz.
"We want to get them out now. We don't want to have other bad people coming into our country. By using the word bad, I'm being nice," Trump said.
The president also talked about his phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, telling reporters he thinks the U.S. is "in very good shape with China and the trade deal," but didn't offer any specifics.
He said the U.S. has a deal with China in place but is sending a team for more discussions to “make sure that everybody understands what the deal is.”
Trump said he and first lady Melania Trump will be going to China to accept Xi’s invitation to visit “at a certain point.”
