Description
The government of El Salvador says it thwarted an attempt by fifty high school students to form a criminal gang.
"We have managed to capture 46 individuals, including 14 minors, who were organizing to create a criminal structure that threatened to disrupt the peace and security that we have worked so hard to consolidate in our country," says Rodolfo Delgado, El Salvador's attorney general, at a press conference.
This is the first time that authorities announce an attempted formation of a gang, called "La Raza" since President Nayib Bukele launched a "war" against gangs under an exceptional regime.
The gang operated in three public schools and aimed to fill the "criminal power vacuum" left by gangs cornered by Bukele’s security campaign, according to the attorney general. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
