Description
Original script September 9, 1957
Another school of higher learning is San Diego University, on top of the hill overlooking the northern rim of Mission Valley. On this tour of the campus, you’ll see some of the huge, beautiful white buildings that comprise the university which is less than six years old. These are views of the Immaculate Heart Major Seminary, the latest building to be completed. This is the College for Women…one of four in the country administered by the Society of the Sacred Heart. Here are the buildings that served as the Men’s College but starting this week will be the new boy’s high school. Construction is going full speed ahead on three major campus buildings. This is the Immaculate Chapel…patterned after the large churches of Europe. Buildings are of stone block, concrete and marble. The library building, here, is scheduled for completion early next year. Also planned, a 3 ½ million-dollar arts and sciences building. The third unit under construction is the Law building. The law school has been in operation since April 1954 and will hold its first commencement next June. Both men and women attend law classes, held in the evening. This is the site of the arts and sciences building. One thousand students are expected to attend classes at the university this fall…a far cry from a few short years ago when the Alcala Park campus was a barren hill bordering the Linda Vista Road. The growth of the school is attributed to the vision, zeal and courage of the most reverend bishop of San Diego.
It became the University of San Diego in 1972.
