Description
San Diego Open golf tournament January 1967 January 11, 1967 Stardust Country Club in Mission Valley. Check out those empty hillsides! The PGA tournament began in 1952. It moved to Torrey Pines in 1968 and has been held there since.
144 golfers teed off in the opening round of the San Diego Open. Local fellas like Chuck Courtney here, along with Rodgers, Littler, Geiberger—former winners like Art Wall—all will be trying for that top prize money. Last year’s champ and a local boy to boot –Billy Casper, is the odds-on favorite to repeat and walk away with 13,200 dollars. Besides Casper, yesterday’s spotlight in the pro am was on baseball’s Sandy Koufax, whose team carded a respectable 59. Koufax had a moment of triumph—sinking a 20-footer. Tv 8 sports director Lyle Bond and his cohorts weren’t bragging about their efforts except for a 65 turned in by Jack Fleck. Jack, who was in Lyle’s foursome is a former US Open champ and a hot contender in the open action. (See original scripts with all the information after the film)
