Dozens of people gather in the Dutch village of Jaarsveld to watch fierljeppen, or canal jumping, where athletes sprint on a platform, jump, clamber up a pole and try to propel themselves across a canal as far as possible into sand on the other side. "This is really typically Dutch, canal jumping. I think because the rest of the world does not have not so many canals and also maybe the people are not so crazy," says world fierljeppen record holder Jaco de Groot. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
