Description
Residents of the Kyrgyz region of Batken discover the benefits of rice husk blocks for home building. "Insulation, costs and convenience for builders", says Akmatbek Uraimov, as he stands in the middle of the construction site of his future house. "Over the past five years, we sold materials for the construction of 300 houses" says Nursultan Taabaldyev, a pioneer of the technology in the region. Across Central Asia, which is particularly vulnerable to global warming and grapples with water shortages, rice husk is emerging a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to water-intensive cement.
