The shooting early Saturday morning happened near the intersection of South Ludlow and West Town streets, near Bicentennial Park. An 18-year-old man was killed and seven others were injured.
The shooting victims were taken to different hospitals in the area. The conditions of all but one victim were described as stable, police said.
Police identified the man who died as Jusiah Mason. A spokesperson with Columbus City Schools confirmed that Mason was a recent graduate of Beechcroft High School.
Sgt. Joseph Albert said all of the victims are either 17 or 18 years old.
There was a large group of people in the area before the shooting. Albert said police received calls from residents five minutes before the shooting that there were between 50 to 80 people in the area.
Albert said there were "several individuals in several vehicles" in the area of South Ludlow and West Town streets. According to Albert, several people fired a weapon, adding that a "lot of shots" were fired. He did not say how many shots were fired. A majority of the people involved in the shooting left the scene.
It's unclear what exactly led up to shots being fired. Albert said detectives are still reviewing surveillance video, but police are still asking for help.
"We're asking anyone who might have been there to come forward, come talk to our detectives. We know from history that if there's a large group of younger people hanging out together, typically someone is taking cellphone video. We would like to see that cellphone video," Albert said.
Albert is also asking any businesses in the area to send in surveillance video from that night if they have it.
"Gun violence in our city has to stop. It has to end. We need the young adults and juveniles in our city to realize that there is more to life than gun violence. The quicker they learn that, the better we will be as a city and as a community," Albert said.
Ginther released a statement on Monday, asking parents to keep an eye on their children and who they are associating with.
“Violence in our city – particularly involving and impacting young people — must stop. Columbus Police are doing their part by actively patrolling our neighborhoods and downtown,” Ginther said. “The city is doing our part by investing more than $28 million into opportunities for young people to stay active and safe this summer. Now, I need parents to do their part – know who your kids are hanging out with, set a curfew in your home, check your kids’ rooms for weapons and check their social media for unsafe activities.”
Ginther also pleaded to gun owners not to leave guns in their car.
“Too many crimes are being committed with guns that were unsecured and stolen from vehicles,” he said.
Columbus police are asking for anyone who may have video, photos or other digital evidence to submit it through a QR code. Police said the submissions can remain anonymous and no account is required.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
