Description
Human Rights Watch presents a report in Lima denouncing the Peruvian Congress for weakening investigations into organized crime.
"What the report finds is that the measures taken by the Peruvian Congress have weakened the state's ability to combat organized crime in Peru," says Juanita Goebertus, Americas Director at Human Rights Watch, during the presentation of the report "Congress in Complicity: How Peru's Legislature Enables the Progress of Organized Crime" in Lima.
Violence in Peru has surged amid a rise in extortion, contract killings, and illegal mining. The situation prompted the government to declare a state of emergency in 2024 and deploy the military to the streets in several areas of the country. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
