Description
US President Donald Trump has reignited his trade war by threatening more than a dozen countries with higher tariffs, including key US ally Japan, announcing that Tokyo would be hit with 25 percent tariffs on its goods.
He has also mounted pressure on Japan to open its rice market and import more American grains. While this may offer more choices for consumers, it has sparked concerns among local farmers.
"If a massive volume of cheaper rice were to enter the market, it may disrupt the market temporarily. That is concerning for farmers and rice professionals like us," says Shinichi Katayama, the fourth-generation owner of 120-year-old Tokyo rice wholesaler Sumidaya. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
