Description
In Brazil's Amazonian city of Manaus, emergency crews intensify flood response as waters from the Rio Negro begin to recede.
With over 530,000 people affected across the state, the city is also battling another crisis: an overwhelming wave of garbage washing into rivers and streams. Despite containment efforts intercepting more than 1,350 tons of waste so far this year, officials say irregular dumping and heavy rains continue to fuel pollution in the fragile waterways.
"It's embarrassing to see how dirty the river is. So much trash, plastic bottles, bags. It's frustrating not to be able to do more to clean it up and see a clean river," says local tour guide Severino Simoes. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
