Description
In the heart of Essaouira, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, Mohamed Ouakrim handcrafts the guembri, a three-stringed bass plucked lute with deep ancestral roots. From his modest workshop to the vibrant stages of the Gnawa and World Music Festival, the instrument transcends musical boundaries. "It can adapt to any musical style," says Moroccan musician Majid Bekkas, particularly jazz and blues, with which it shares "structured rhythms and a pentatonic scale". IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
