The Mont-Valérien fortress, just west of Paris, is home to Europe's last military pigeon loft. It is the only place on the continent where you can meet carrier pigeons bred by the French Army, once used to transmit messages. "Pigeon 193 529, a 2017 pigeon, is a racing pigeon, it's competing again this weekend, it's in its last season, and so it's a carrier pigeon, so a pigeon that could have been used to carry messages during the First and Second World Wars," explains Sergeant Marshal Sylvain.
