Description
Threaths and pressure on opposition journalists in Turkey have increased since the arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu last March. Sozcu TV, one of the most popular TV channels in Turkey, have been forced off air for 10 days because of streaming an opposition rally live after the arrest of the Istanbul mayor. "The reason for the decision is the government's authoritarianism", says Sozcu TV director Ozgur Cakmakci. According to the Turkish journalists union, at least 16 journalists are in jail. Among them Furkan Karabay, who was arrested last May for "targeting individuals involved in counterterrorism efforts" over social media posts. "He was a journalist who, every day, was chasing news at the Caglayan courthouse, reporting the irregularities in trials," says his brother and lawyer Harun Karabay. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
