A month ahead of Bolivia's elections, wealthy center-right businessman Samuel Doria Medina is leading in the polls and pledging to change the leftist economic model championed for 20 years by the ruling Movement for Socialism (MAS) party.
Doria Medina, 66, is one of the richest entrepreneurs in the South American country. He describes himself as a social democrat and currently leads voter preferences for the August 17 election with 18.7%, according to a recent Ipsos-Ciesmori poll.
"A new era is about to begin, where the top priority will be to restore economic stability, and then to carry out a series of deep reforms to move away from statism and build a capitalist, market-driven, competitive economy open to the world," says the Alianza Unidad coalition candidate.
