Description
Heavy drinking among women has seen a sharp and alarming rise since the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 41% increase reported nationwide.
In Indiana, nearly 19% of women aged 18 to 44 say they binge drink — a trend that has prompted concern among public health experts and physicians alike.
“This is a real public health issue,” Dr. Mimi Ko-Koska said. “Women tend to absorb alcohol faster and metabolize it more slowly than men, which means the health impacts are more significant and come quicker.”
The long-term risks associated with alcohol consumption are well-documented. Ko-Koska points to a wide range of issues — including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, alcohol-related dementia and a heightened risk of at least six types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer.
But while older women – particularly those aged 35 to 54 – are driving much of the increase, a very different trend is taking hold among younger generations.
