Description
The 10 Weather Impact Team issued a 10 Weather Impact Alert through Wednesday and Friday for high heat, as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s. And the combination of high temperatures and high humidity means the heat index is expected to reach over 100 degrees during the afternoon each day.
Heat Advisories are in effect for all of central Ohio through Wednesday.
Mild forms of heat-related illness include heat cramps and heat rash, both of which can be caused by extensive sweating. Below is a list of signs when heat-related illnesses can progress into heat exhaustion:
Dizziness
Nausea
Excessive sweating
Feeling weak
Thirst
Getting a headache
Immediate action for heat exhaustion includes:
Moving to a cool, ideally air-conditioned space
Drinking liquids that will hydrate you
Loosening clothes
Applying wet clothes
More heat-safety tips can be found at the bottom.
Tuesday will likely be the hottest day of the week as temperatures could reach the upper 90s! Heat index values will be over 100 in the afternoon.
The heat risk map from the National Weather Service has all of Ohio in the extreme category on Tuesday.
A "Heat Dome" is taking shape over a large part of the eastern United States, going into next week. This is a large area of high pressure which will allow for mainly sunny skies, but also hot temperatures.
Across Ohio, temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s through the next several days. With the humidity, it will feel like it is near or over 100 at times.
Make sure to find ways to stay cool with this extreme heat! Avoid spending a long time outside during the peak heat in the afternoon. Try to get outdoor activities in during the morning or later in the evening. Stay hydrated!
Your 10 Weather Impact team will be monitoring this heat expected for the weekend and into next week. It is possible that the heat and humidity will continue through the middle to end of next week.
Tips on staying safe during a heat wave
Columbus Public Health reminds residents of other ways to stay healthy and safe in hot weather:
Drink plenty of water. Do not wait until you are thirsty.
Stay in air conditioning whenever possible. If you do not have an air conditioner, use movie theaters, malls, libraries and other public places that are cool.
Avoid beverages with alcohol, caffeine and sugar because they will dehydrate you.
Eat light meals.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Avoid strenuous activities and limit them to morning and evening hours.
Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.
Check on family members, friends and neighbors.
Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
What if I have to be outside?
Here are some tips from Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability:
Limit your sun exposure by staying in the shade or using an umbrella. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat or cap.
If you work outside and have access to cool water, consider soaking your shirt and repeating the process every hour or whenever it dries out.
Homeless people should reach out to shelters for information on local resources, including temporary cooling centers.
