Description
The second Mifflin Township police officer who was injured in a shooting late last month was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon.
Two officers with the Mifflin Township Police Department were shot and injured on May 28 while conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue. About four minutes after they stopped a car and engaged with the driver, the passenger, 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon, bailed out and began running, Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said in a press conference.
As the officers pursued the passenger, authorities said he turned and opened fire on both officers. Baldwin said it was “unprovoked.”
Both officers were shot and taken to Grant Medical Center. One of the officers, who was initially described as stable, was discharged from the hospital the day after the shooting. The other officer went into emergency surgery and was in the intensive care unit after being taken in for another surgery.
He was discharged nearly a month later. Other officers and first responders lined the sidewalk outside of Grant Medical Center Monday for a clap-out.
Dixon is charged with attempted murder and felonious assault in connection to the shooting.
