Description
A beloved hippo who lived at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park passed away, according to a Sunday night post from wildlife officials.
Lu spent more than 60 years at the state park after being born at the San Diego Zoo in January 1960. He came to the area in 1964, where he lived out the rest of his life.
State officials said he was a "charismatic actor" and had appearances in several movies and television shows such as "Daktari," "Cowboy in Africa," the "Art Linkletter Show" and the "Herb Albert Special." Although it was his "calm presence and gentle personality" that made him lovable to generations of Floridians and visitors.
"Lu was not just an animal in the park; he was a friend, a fixture and a treasured member of the community," a release read. "His legacy extends beyond his impressive lifespan — he represented the deep connection between people and the animals who inspire wonder, empathy and stewardship."
The gentle giant is survived in spirit by park rangers who cared for him, millions of visitors and the wildlife community, the post read.
"He will be deeply missed and forever remembered," officials wrote.
