Description
A couple was found dead Friday afternoon during a welfare check at their Largo home. Now, their 37-year-old son is being charged with their murder.
Pinellas County deputies responded just after 12:30 p.m. Friday to a home on Saunders Avenue after a caller requested a welfare check for an employee who didn't report to work.
They arrived to find 53-year-old Elizabeth Kirchner and 64-year-old Steven Kirchner dead in the living room from apparent gunshot wounds.
Detectives say throughout their investigation, they learned that the couple's son, 37-year-old Nicholas Kirchner, had fled the scene before deputies arrived.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office then got a call from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina regarding a separate incident that reportedly involved Nicholas Kirchner.
Deputies in South Carolina, where Kirchner lives, described him as "armed and dangerous with anti-law enforcement views."
Around 11 a.m. Friday, they responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm. Witnesses told deputies Kirchner pointed a gun at multiple people and threatened to shoot them.
"He allegedly held one family member at gunpoint and forced another to enter the home to retrieve someone, threatening to shoot the hostage in the head if the demands were not met," the Sumter County Sheriff's Office wrote.
According to detectives, Kirchner said, "I've already killed two people — I'll kill some more."
That's when a family member came out of the house with a firearm, reportedly prompting Kirchner to get into his car and leave.
Around 4 p.m. the same day, Nicholas Kirchner was located and arrested by the Taliaferro County Sheriff's Office in Georgia.
He has a felony warrant for two counts of first-degree premeditated murder in the death of his parents.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Kirchner admitted multiple times that he murdered his parents, describing it as a "righteous kill."
The investigation is ongoing.
