Description
A driver was arrested Thursday evening for blocking traffic on Dale Mabry Highway and falsely claiming to have a bomb inside his car, according to the Tampa Police Department.
Just after 6:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of an unconscious driver behind the wheel that was blocking traffic on the southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway and Columbus Drive.
Officers arrived to find that the car's engine was still running with the gear in reverse. The driver, later identified as 30-year-old Jeremy Johnson, was reportedly asleep in the driver's seat but was woken up by officers.
Police say Johnson then picked up "drug paraphernalia in plain view" and smoked out of it as officers were asking him to get out of the car.
"During the officers' continued attempts to take Johnson into custody, he stated he had a bomb inside the vehicle," the police department wrote in an update.
In an abundance of caution, police shut down southbound traffic on Dale Mabry Highway between Columbus Drive and Tampa Bay Boulevard. Officers searched the car and Johnson's belongings and found the bomb threat to be unfounded.
Police say Johnson complied after 25 minutes, got out of the car and was taken into custody.
Johnson was charged with:
one felony count of possession of cocaine,
one felony count of driving with a revoked license,
one misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence,
one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia,
one misdemeanor count of possession of a drug without a prescription and
one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.
