Description
Hillsborough County deputies say they're investigating after a woman shot and killed her handyman during a physical fight overnight in Tampa.
Officials responded to calls at 12:25 a.m. Thursday on Jeanal Place near North Ola Avenue. They arrived to find a man dead inside the home and a woman hurt outside.
In an update, Sheriff Chad Chronister said the fight began when the woman tried to evict the handyman she had been housing for the past six months.
He reportedly became "irate" and began physically attacking the woman. The sheriff did not share her age but described her as "fragile" and "elderly."
"He started throwing things around as he was aggressively moving towards her, to the point where she retrieved a firearm because she truly felt that she was in fear for her life," Sheriff Chronister said.
Chronister said the man was basically on top of the woman when she shot him. She then fell, which is what led to her injuries.
The man was a seven-time convicted felon while the woman has no criminal history, according to the sheriff's office.
The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will review the case and determine if the shooting was justified through self-defense.
The investigation is ongoing.
