Description
More than 15,000 pounds of beef jerky and snack stick products have been recalled due to an undeclared allergen.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a recall alert Tuesday for the jerky products after it found products contained anchovies, which are not listed on product labels. The manufacturer, Springville Meat & Cold Storage Co. Inc. also is voluntarily recalling elk, venison and buffalo jerky products.
The recalled items were produced on various dates from May 30, 2023, to May 30, 2025, according to the USDA alert. The jerky products, which were sold and distributed nationwide, are identified by establishment number "EST. 20528" inside the USDA inspection mark.
Production observations conducted by FSIS inspectors revealed that the manufacturer recently switched to a new Worcestershire sauce that contained anchovies, a known allergen. The company previously used a sauce without anchovies.
The fish-based ingredient creates a potentially dangerous situation for consumers with fish allergies, who rely on accurate product labeling to avoid severe allergic reactions.
While no confirmed adverse reactions have been reported to date, federal food safety officials are urging consumers to take immediate action. Anyone who has purchased the affected products should not consume them and should either discard the items or return them to their place of purchase.
