Description
A 9-year-old girl is recovering at a Tampa hospital after nearly losing her hand to a shark bite.
The shark attack happened around noon Wednesday while Leah Lendel was swimming with her family in Boca Grande.
Witnesses said the attack happened just 10-15 feet from the shore while Leah was swimming with a board. Raynel Lugo, who helped get the shark away from the girl, told news station WINK that her hand was covered in blood and mostly torn off when she came up from the water screaming.
"The whole thing was completely hanging out," Lugo said of Leah's hand. "You can see bones, all completely red."
Lugo helped wrap a towel around Leah's hand to stop the bleeding and stayed with her until emergency responders arrived.
He told WINK he believes it was a bull shark, about 7-8 feet long, behind the attack.
Leah was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where her mother confirmed with 10 Tampa Bay that she's now out of surgery with blood flow restored to her hand. She is showing some movement in two of her fingers but can't feel the rest, the Lendel family added.
Leah is set to undergo another procedure on Friday to see if more can be done to restore feeling in her hand.
The Lendel Family provided the following statement:
We want to say Thank You to everyone that is praying for our sweet Leah. We are thankful for the quick response of everyone that was on scene, the construction workers and residents that ran out to help and the first responders and to all the doctors/nurses that are doing everything to help our girl.
Yesterday Leah had an extensive surgery on her hand (wrist & fingers). The doctors were able to get blood flow to her hand and fingers. She is showing some movement in two fingers but can’t feel the rest. The doctors will be doing another procedure tomorrow to see if there is anything else that needs to be done.
The fact that Leah has all her fingers attached is already a testimony. From witnessing her wrist hanging on by just the skin, to have blood flow in all of her hand and fingers is truly a miracle.
Please keep praying for our family, our God is a miracle worker.
Officials in Boca Grande say they're keeping a close eye on the waters while clarifying that this kind of shark attack is extremely rare — with the last one happening about 20 years ago.
“These occurrences are limited, but there always is a potential. I don’t think it’s a cause for alarm at this point and we’ll just continue to monitor the waters and the situation," Boca Grande Fire Chief C.W. Blosser said.
