June 30 on The Story: When the Oregon Legislature wrapped up Friday night — two days before they absolutely had to end the session — they left behind some pretty major unfinished business. The funding package that was meant to fix Oregon's many roadway woes fell apart, and lawmakers seem to have lacked the political will to try again. On Saturday, Gov. Tina Kotek said that the failure would mean layoff notices going out to hundreds of ODOT workers across the state. But it won't be ODOT alone impacted by the funding failure; city and county transportation departments rely on that same source of funding, meaning they are also faced with layoffs and cutbacks without some source of intervention.
