Description
June 26 on The Story: After much acrimony late last week and into this one, the legislators working on a major transportation funding bill in Salem returned to work today with a new, slimmed-down version after their last one got tossed back from the House floor. The proposed amendment loses some of the package's more controversial pieces, like a new "transfer" tax on vehicle sales and a plan to index the gas tax to inflation beginning in 2029, and overall revises the price tag down. At the same time, it plays a lot of the hits: a gas tax hike, pay-per-mile fees, some DMV fee hikes and a higher transit tax. Lawmakers are running out of time to get the bill done, with the session ending Sunday at the very latest (and likely to wrap sooner).
