Description
After the first two executions in 15 years, the future of the death penalty in Indiana is in question over the difficulty, and cost, of the drugs used.
Gov. Mike Braun says he is open to discussing the future of capital punishment in the state after Indiana carried out two executions in roughly six months.
"The whole question of the death penalty is one that's going to be discussed," Braun said. "And then when it comes to something that's got a shelf life of 90 days, I think we got in a pickle."
Braun was describing the issues with pentobarbital, the drug used in lethal injections. In low doses, it is used as an anesthetic, but in high doses it is lethal. But getting the drug to use it for executions is difficult. Many foreign countries ban the sale of drugs to be used in executions, and companies where it may be legal face extreme pressure from opponents of the death penalty.
