Description
Greenpeace activists unfurl a 70-meter banner from the Estela de Luz monument in Mexico City demanding that SEMARNAT, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, take specific actions and implement programs to protect the Mayan rainforest. According to Carlos Samayoa, coordinator of Greenpeace's “Mexico to the cry of the jungle” campaign, "in the last five years we have lost more than 300,000 hectares of jungle. It's easy to say a number like that, but in reality it's barbaric. We're talking about more than 16 times the entire territory of Mexico City. That's what we've lost in just five years. If we look at the deforestation that has taken place in that area in the last 20 years, in the last five years it has been more than in the previous two decades." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
