Our history of marching on WashingtonThe 1987 protest in Washington D.C. was the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on October 11, 1987. The march drew hundreds of thousands of people, including those affected by the AIDS crisis, who called for increased federal funding for AIDS research and protection against discrimination. A central feature of the event was the unveiling of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on the National Mall, a powerful visual display of panels honoring people who had died from AIDS.
