Description
Hundreds of transporters block roads in Lima in a new protest against extortion and the murders of 47 drivers so far this year by organized crime.
Several companies in the sector join the call to shut down engines for 24 hours in various districts of the Peruvian capital of over 10 million inhabitants.
Protesters placed messages on their vehicles denouncing extortion, which has multiplied in the past year and become the biggest challenge for the unpopular government of Dina Boluarte.
"No more mourning," read windshields where they also place black ribbons or photos of the murdered drivers.
"I've lost coworkers," says a 42-year-old public transport driver. "I don't think it's fair what the government is doing by leaving us unprotected. I can't work in peace. I go out to work thinking they're going to kill me," he adds. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
