Description
Forget the old adage that "cleanliness is next to godliness". Graffiti -- of a sort -- is now welcomed at the spiritual home of global Anglicanism in southeast England, to the ire of US Vice President JD Vance. Featuring eternal human queries like "why all the suffering?" and "are you there?", a new exhibition of graffiti-style artworks posing ordinary people's questions to God now adorns the hallowed walls of Canterbury Cathedral and has invited widespread controversy.
"Graffiti is something that is on the side of trains... I just don't think it belongs in a place like this," says Londoner Paul Wilkinson, calling the questions "pithy little platitudes". Swiss tourist Maria Rück disagrees, arguing that "it brings a kind of second thought that makes you think about it... so I find it really interesting." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
