Description
President Donald Trump is urging Iran to make a nuclear deal now that Israel has launched strikes against the country.
Trump says on social media Iran should make a deal “before there is nothing left and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire.”
Associated Press White House reporter Aamer Madhani says that this is a difficult moment for Trump because of the claims he made regarding foreign policy on the campaign trail in 2024.
“He really did run in 2024 on this idea that you know he would keep the U.S. out of endless wars. These strikes by Israel have Washington and the world really nervous about what might lie ahead, and concerns of a more expansive Middle East war,” Madhani said.
Trump is holding onto hope the long-simmering dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program can be resolved.
But with the Israeli military operation now underway and likely to continue for some time, Trump will be tested anew on his ability to deliver on a campaign promise to disentangle the U.S. from foreign conflicts.
