Description
Education Secretary Linda McMahon is expected to move quickly now that the Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration to continue unwinding her department.
Associated Press education reporter Collin Binkley says Monday's ruling allows the department to move ahead with mass layoffs and a plan to outsource work to other federal agencies.
“Already the department said its planning to move its workforce development programs to the Department of Labor, and it’s negotiating an agreement with the Treasury Department related to the management of student loans,” Binkley said.
Lawyers from the department have already previewed next steps in court filings.
In March, Trump suggested the Small Business Administration would take on federal student loans.
But a court filing in June indicated the Treasury Department is expected to take over the work.
The department had also recently struck a deal to outsource workforce training and adult education to the Department of Labor.
Binkley says this is all part of Trump’s plan to shut down the department and move its power to the states.
“Some education advocates worry it will lead to disruptions and ultimately fewer services for students across the country,” Binkley said.
