A child was struck by a vehicle Thursday night in the Westerville Woods neighborhood, prompting renewed safety concerns from residents who have been warning for weeks about increased traffic in the area.
“It almost felt like a prophecy coming true in a way because we all knew that a big accident was going to happen here," said Victoria Schroer, who moved to the area a year ago. "It was all kind of just building up to the unthinkable moment of a child being struck by one of these reckless drivers."
The incident comes amid the closure of Westerville Road between Valley Park Avenue and Westerville Woods Drive as a roundabout is constructed at the entry of Kilbourne Run Sports Park. Residents say the closure has caused drivers to cut through local streets that are not supposed to be part of the detour, bringing heavy traffic into what is normally a quiet neighborhood.
“It’s been increasing the amount of traffic, the reckless driving has been crazy and it’s just a concern for the neighborhood at this point for safety," Schroer told 10TV.
"As a result, those hundreds of cars per hour that would normally go up and down that major state highway are now running past these houses, competing with trash cans, school buses and mail trucks," said Ethan Chesser, who lives off Westerville Road.
Neighbor Chad Stevens said the city-installed signage meant to direct drivers is not enough, even after seeing some improvements following 10TV's initial reporting on the area.
