Shane, a bulldog mix, is one of many recent arrivals at the shelter.
For the staff and agents at Columbus Humane, every day brings new stories of resilience amid heartbreaking neglect.
“Often times when we seize these animals coming out of abandonment situations they can be suffering from dehydration, lack of food. They can be ravenous for food," said Laura Advent, doctor of veterinary medicine at Columbus Humane.
Humane Agent Aleah Brady leads investigations of animal abandonment and cruelty. Humane agents say they get about 16,000 calls a year about cruelty which leads to about 6,000 investigations.
But it’s animal surrenders that is occupying a lot more of their time.
“The need for surrender is so high right now. Unfortunately there are very limited open spaces at other shelters and other rescues so we are unfortunately booked out that far in advance," Brady said.
