Description
A cherished family orchard, a cornerstone of a community in Licking County since the 1970s, is beginning to rebuild after a heartbreaking loss.
A dozen fire departments responded early Sunday morning to a massive blaze at the Legend Hills Orchard farmer’s market near Utica. The fire burned through the metal roof before crews arrived, making it impossible to save the building, fire officials said.
In daylight, the extent of the damage became painfully clear. According to the County Line Joint Fire District, the building was deemed a total loss.
“It is a tragic event,” said owner Susan Hatch.
Despite the destruction, Hatch emphasized that no one was injured.
“No one was hurt and that’s the most important thing,” she said. “We are going to be okay. We are usually open year round — this year, of course, that’s going to change a little bit.”
In a social media post, the orchard said that their cider press, storage and grading areas were destroyed and that the market would be closed for the remainder of the season.
The orchard has long been a destination for families and visitors from near and far. Generations have made lasting memories there.
“We did a lot of work here, and we are very proud and thankful for the community,” Hatch said.
In the wake of the fire, the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.
“We have received so many kind messages, and people expressing that they are praying for our family — and we sure do appreciate that," she said.
For now, the family is focused on rebuilding, determined to return and continue serving the community they’ve called home for decades.
