Description
It's here! The Perseid Meteor Shower is currently in progress and will reach its peak on Aug. 12-13, and you may be able to spot several meteors per hour.
This annual meteor shower begins in late July and continues through much of August, reaching its peak around mid-August. This meteor shower occurs every year as the Earth passes through the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and NASA.
Every year holds a different number of meteors as the concentration of particles in the debris trail will differ, so some years there may only be 10-20 meteors per hour, while other years hold over 100 meteors per hour during the peak.
This year, we're dealing with a nearly full moon, and its brightness will wash out some of the smaller meteors from being seen. If you want to try to spot the meteor showers, make sure that you head out on a clear night and get away from city lights to give you the best viewing.
For those hoping to capture a photo of a meteor, that can be extremely difficult as they happen quickly. Try using a long exposure on a DSLR camera or your phone if it has that function.
Our 10 Weather Impact team is tracking clear skies the next couple of nights, but clouds and showers could impact viewing Tuesday night.
